After having launched their first original series, Lilyhammer, and after having announced their second original series, Orange is the New Black, Netflix has now officially announced their third original series, Hemlock Grove. The third show, which is a horror series, is set to launch sometime in 2013, and will be one of five original series Netflix aims to have available by next year.
Netflix continues to collect prominent figures in the media space for their original series, as Lilyhammer stars Steve Van Zandt of The Sopranos fame, and the second original series Orange is the New Black will be executive produced by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan. The newly announced series, Hemlock Grove, stars Famke Janssen of X-Men fame and Bill Skarsgard. The story is set in a Pennsylvania steel town, and follows a young girl’s murder, whose mysterious killer could be any number of creepy characters or creatures.
Hemlock Grove, which is based on a novel by Brian McGreevy, will be directed and executive produced by Eli Roth, who not only acted in Inglourious Basterds as Sgt. Donny Donowitz, “The Bear Jew,” but created the gut-wrenching Hostel franchise.
On top of these three new series, remember, before Arrested Development hits theaters with its movie, it will first debut as a new, though limited series on Netflix, and rumors are floating about that Netflix might pick up the recently canceled big budget Terra Nova, as well as the ABC drama The River.
Though Netflix seems to be making a big push toward original programming, cable television is probably safe for the moment, though if Netflix does manage to land either Terra Nova or The River, it could be a safe haven for canceled shows, which just about every show with a cult following could use.
