Between the Edgar Wright leaving Ant-Man news and the Pete Holmes cancellation  news, we’ve been pretty bummed over here at Team Geekosystem. But… what’s that? Is that a talking can of vegetables come to tell us that everything will be okay? Probably not, but who cares?
According to rumors from Variety, it’s looking more and more like the oft-talked about Wet Hot American Summer prequel might one day come to fruition, this time in the form of a 10 episode season on Netflix. Original movie creators David Wain and Michael Showalter are reportedly on tap to executive produce the series, though it’s unclear whether or not they’ll write and direct once again.
“The prequel would be the same summer so they would be 20 years old for the part yeah, but not younger,” Wain said when he first put forth the idea of creating a prequel back in 2011, ten years after the first movie was released. “So it would be 40 year olds playing 16 year olds. And yeah, we’re in the early stages of thinking about that.” Later in 2012, he updated us all on his progress, saying, “Seriously, we’re doing it. I know everyone wants to know.” Of course, at the time they were very busy with They Came Together, the soon-to-be-release romantic comedy parody with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. So of course they have time for Wet Hot now, right? … Right?
Speaking of Paul Rudd — he, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, Janeane Garofalo, and David Hyde Pierce have all expressed interest in returning. Hopefully they can also get Bradley Cooper, Amy Poeher, Ken Marino, Molly Shannon, Michael Ian Black, Joe Lo Truglio, Judah Friedlander, and dear God there were a lot of people in that movie, huh? Man, if they can pull this off, they’ll put even Arrested Development to shame.
