All the theaters in Uzbekistan have refused to screen Deadpool in theaters based on “ethical” grounds. One of the country’s largest movie theater chains, MegaCinema, recently made the announcement, saying, “We won’t screen Deadpool as it has an age restriction and is not in line with ethical norms in our society.”
Keep in mind that Uzbekistan isn’t the first country to ban Deadpool — China earned that distinction last month. They banned the merc with a mouth for pretty much the same reasons: violence, nudity, and graphic language.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, ultimately it’s up to the individual movie chains to decide on whether to screen a movie or not. Vladimir Kozlov writes:
News agency Sputnik quoted a representative of national cinema agency Uzbekkino as saying that theaters had the final decision about whether to screen the movie, which was scheduled to open today.
Here’s a fact that Deadpool himself would likely capitalize on: another major movie banned in the area’s Muslim regions is Fifty Shades of Grey. Expect the poster parody to show up soon.
