Well, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi now—and by a bit that means just two more days. News broke from star Ewan McGregor himself that the highly-anticipated Disney+ Star Wars series would be pushing its release date to Friday, May 27th, 2022. Whether that means the series as a whole will come out on Fridays is still up in the air, but it does put Obi-Wan Kenobi on the same day as the release of part one of Netflix’s Stranger Things 4.
In a video released on the social platforms for Star Wars, the Jedi master himself himself announced the news to fans. “Hello, Star Wars fans,” Ewan McGregor began the video. “Thank you for all for your incredible support in response to Obi-Wan Kenobi. I have some important news. Our premiere date is moving just a couple days from Wednesday to Friday, May the 27th.”
The video goes on with McGregor dropping some exciting news about that premiere. “But here’s the exciting part … The first two episodes will premiere together.” This is breaking news, as most of the other Star Wars shows on Disney+ have been just the first episode for fans. So we may be running late two days, but at least we get two episodes for our wait!
“So make sure to tune into both episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, streaming Friday, May the 27th, exclusively on Disney+,” McGregor said.
TWO EPISODES?!
It’s been 17 years since we’ve last seen Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and fans have long hoped for a solo show or movie with the actor. As someone who has watched Revenge of the Sith over 60 times throughout its 17 year existence, I can say that this has indeed been a long time coming. So to gift us with two episodes at the start is both exciting as a fanand intriguing when you think about it on the “theory” side of things. Coming in at 6 episodes in total, releasing 2 to start us off, is an intriguing move. It also puts the end of the show around when Disney+’s Ms. Marvel is also coming to an end, so we’ll be having a very intense month of TV-watching in May.
Set quite some time after the events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi will bring us a new look at Tatooine and what Obi-Wan was doing while he was protecting young Luke Skywalker before we catch up with them in A New Hope. Thinking about the show in terms of what we know from Rebels and the novelizations, we’re in for quite a journey for Obi-Wan and other characters we’ve come to love.
Pair that with Hayden Christensen coming back as Darth Vader and fans are anxious to get Obi-Wan Kenobi going, but the two-day push isn’t going change much. Two episodes at once, though? That should excite fans everywhere!
