Bryan Singer has found his Psylocke! He announced on his Instagram today that The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn will be taking on the role of Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke, in his upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.
I, for one, am thrilled about this! I’m a huge fan of Munn’s, particularly after The Newsroom. She’s got the acting chops, and there’s no question that she can look the part:
Betsy Braddock is Japanese (or, at least, in a Japanese body with the personality traits of a Japanese character, Kwannon). Munn is half Chinese. Is this problematic? I feel weird commenting on this aspect of things, as I’m Latina, and not in any way Asian. However, I’m just glad that this role didn’t go to a white actress. I’m also glad that it went to an actress that was raised primarily in Tokyo, and at least has a lived-in knowledge of the culture. Hell, her Chinese mom was born and raised in Vietnam. Does that also make her Vietnamese? Is your culture in your DNA, or does it have more to do with identification? I don’t have all those answers. All I know is, I dig the idea of Munn playing Psylocke and think she’ll do an awesome job with this role.
What do you all think of Olivia Munn joining the X-Men universe?
