True crime’s popularity in media has skyrocketed in recent years. From podcasts, to documentaries, to TV and film, viewers can’t get enough of the most popular true crime cases. Recently, Only Murders in the Building capitalized on this rising interest—but they did so in an extraordinarily unique and hilarious manner.
Only Murders in the Building premiered on Hulu on August 31st, 2021. The series stars comedy legends Steven Martin and Martin Short, alongside actress and singer Selena Gomez. Martin, Short, and Gomez star as three strangers, who are connected in their shared obsession with a “Serial”-like true crime podcast. When a death occurs in their Upper West Side apartment building, the Arconia, the three start a podcast on their own investigation of the death.
Only Murders in the Building was a surprise hit and received an overwhelmingly positive reception. What the series is, essentially, is a true-crime parody, and it is full of humor and heart. The show is satirical in nature and pokes fun at society’s true crime obsession and true crime podcasts. It is also an eye-opening examination of the insensitivity and obsessive ways that true crime fanbases can sometimes behave. Martin and Short are, naturally, charming and hilarious, but Gomez is the ringer, standing her ground and playing off exceptionally against these two comic legends. Only Murders in the Building’s unique premise, hilarious take on true crime, and impeccable performances from its three leads have left fans anxious for season 2.
Only Murders in the Building season 2 release date
Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait very long for Only Murders in the Building season 2! On March 25, Hulu shared the official season 2 release date, alongside a funny elevator skit featuring the show’s main stars.
Only Murders in the Building season 2 will hit the streaming service on June 28, 2022.
Only Murders in the Building‘s positive reception has raised anticipation for season 2. Furthermore, season 1’s cliffhanger ending has made a second season a true necessity. Season 1 of the series follows the expected course—Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), and Mabel (Gomez) solve the mystery. The three are naturally celebrating their achievement in pinning the murderer. But then the final episode suddenly cuts back to the ominous flashforward that the very first episode began with: two months after their first meeting, Charles and Oliver find Mabel, covered in blood, kneeling over a dead body.
So our trio’s heroism was short-lived and they now find themselves as the prime suspects in a murder. This means that season 2 will see the tables turned on Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. Now, they are the subjects of the true-crime podcast they once created. With this intriguing synopsis, Only Murders in the Building season 2 promises to be just as hilarious, mysterious, and brutally honest as its first season.
