There’s something legitimately haunting about this short documentary on The Phantom Menace, although I can’t quite pin down what. Part of it, I think, is the genuine excitement Lucas and his team seem to have here, the sincere belief that that the movies they’re about to devote a significant portion of their lives to are important and worthwhile. The excitement over Jar Jar, the intensity of the Anakin auditions, George Lucas comparing The Phantom Menace‘s pacing to poetic stanzas–watching this documentary has the same haunted, speculative thrill as walking through a ghost town or visiting an exhibit of Titanic artifacts. They never saw it coming.
