News of this Pokémon fighting game has been floating around for over a year, but it’s finally official: The Pokémon Company has announced an arcade fighter called Pokkén Tournament. And no, the title being a portmanteau of Pokémon and Tekken is no accident—it’s in development at Tekken studio Bandai Namco.
Beyond the above video showing Lucario fighting Machamp, not a whole lot is known about the game, but it certainly seems like a Hyrule Warriors-style attempt to put Nintendo’s characters in an already successful game template and reap the rewards. Currently, the Pokémon featured in the game are all fighting type (Lucario, Machamp, and Blaziken in an older screenshot), so it sadly looks like the game will be more of a traditional fighter than an all-Pokémon version of Smash Bros. (The Wii U and 3DS Smash Bros. games are also in development at Bandai Namco.)
Right now, there’s no news of a Wii U release for the game, and it will instead be released directly in Japanese arcades in 2015. Hopefully that changes in the future, because this mashup looks like a lot more fun than Hyrule Warriors.
