The first teaser for Ava DuVernay’s first television show Queen Sugar dropped yesterday during a commercial break for Greenleaf and the world was not ready. The 13 episode adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name has been on our radar for a while, and is set to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) in the fall. Co-created by DuVernay and Winfrey, the series also boasts an all-female directorial team alongside a stellar cast consisting of Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and more (it’s been announced that Winfrey, who was previously reported to have a recurring role will remain off-screen but active as an executive producer alongside DuVernay and Melissa Carter).
Here’s the synopsis:
The series follows the life of two sisters, Nova Bordelon, the formidable journalist and activist from New Orleans, and Charley Bordelon, a modern woman, who, with her teenage son Micah, leaves her upscale apartment in Los Angeles and moves to the heart of Louisiana to claim an inheritance from her recently departed father – an 800-acre sugarcane farm.
Despite being less than a minute long, there’s already a bunch of excitement and drama that we’re abuzz to see. The teaser gives us a look at the two sisters, romantic plot lines, family allegiances, and “I Am a Man!” posters that bring the story’s stake in civil rights to the forefront.
If you’re interested in wearing your excitement for the series, joining DuVernay’s ARRAY as a “Full Rebel” will come with a #QueenSugar beanie (one of many awesome perks). Are you excited to see Queen Sugar this fall?
