Queer Zombie Movie ‘Queens of the Dead’ Just Gets More and More Exciting

After her phenomenal performance in Love Lies Bleeding, Katy O’Brian is back to light the screen up in another queer movie.

The Twisters star is a part of the talented ensemble that will feature in Tina Romero’s zombie apocalypse film Queens of the Dead. Romero is the daughter of late zombie film icon George A. Romero, who made the genre his own following the success of his Night of the Living Dead series of movies. As per reports, Romero will be paying homage to his father’s earlier works, albeit with a twist.

O’Brian’s co-stars include Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story), Brigette Lundy-Paine (I Saw the TV Glow), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), and Jaquel Spivey (Mean Girls reboot). Co-written by Tina Romero and Erin Judge, the film will follow a group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies as they have to club together to survive a zombie apocalypse by hook or crook. Queens of the Dead‘s backdrop has been described as “a drag show in Brooklyn,” which lends an intriguing tone to the premise of the movie.

Nina West (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Becca Blackwell (Bros), Riki Lindhome (Under the Silver Lake), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), and Eve Lindley (Bros) form the supporting cast. It is difficult to comment on the movie’s release window as of yet, considering it is currently in pre-production.

Regarded as the godfather of the zombie film genre, George A. Romero has left behind a rich filmography that spans decades, from his 1968 debut, Night of the Living Dead, to his final film, Survival of the Dead, which is the sixth entry in the series. Apart from being laden with horror tropes and gore, Romero’s films were noted for having fearless social commentary. We’re excited to see Tina Romero take on the genre, carrying forward the legacy of a Hollywood titan and making it her own.
