Reel FX, the studio behind The Book of Life, announced their next big project, an animated feature film titled Wish Police, based off a novella by Daniel Nayeri. Here’s the synopsis:
The story takes place in a world where children’s bad wishes come to life as mayhem-making villains, and a secret organization called The Wish Police must work ‘round the clock to apprehend the evildoers and keep the world safe! WISH POLICE is targeting a late 2017/early 2018 release.
The first look (above) is pretty cute, but this book trailer for Nayeri’s novella has a much more sinister tone to it which is interesting. I had some bad wishes as a kid, so I would like to see a more nightmarish tone to the animation.
Barcelona-based trio Adrian Garcia, Alfredo Torres, and Victor Maldonado, who make up Headless Productions will be directing, with Kirk Bodyfelt from Paramount producing. Patrick Hanenburger from Rise of the Guardians will work as production designer and Margaret Wuller from How to Train Your Dragon will lead visual development as art director. Hanenberger and Wuller have done some remarkable work together as Neuland in the past, so it’s very exciting to see them on this project. (The overall gender ratio here is, unfortunately, very indicative of the field.)
Maldonado says they “couldn’t be happier to unveil a glimpse of the unique visual style of Wish Police. We think our color palette and character designs—which you see only a hint of here—feel fresh and unexpected. We want to create a film whose visuals are as moving as its story.”
It’ll be a while until we see more of the film, but what do you think about Wish Police?
