The music world is reeling from the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away yesterday while on tour with the band in Columbia. Cause of death has yet to be determined, and Hawkins was only 50 years old. It’s a devastating loss for family and friends, and for the millions of Foo Fighters fans across the globe. The beloved rock band, which formed by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl in 1994, won 12 Grammys, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just last year.
“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” the band said on Twitter. “Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginable difficult time.”
If you grew up in the ’90s, you were likely a fan of the Foo Fighters. The band was a ubiquitous presence on the radio, reaching alternative rock icon status with hits like “Monkey Wrench”, “Everlong”, and “My Hero”. For fellow millennials, the Foo Fighters were literally the soundtrack to our coming of age. And Hawkins’ rigorous, energetic drumming set the pace for so many bands to follow. Musicians, fans, and friends from all over the world paid tribute to Hawkins on social media, remembering his talent and his friendship.
