The CW’s Riverdale, based on the world of Archie Comics, has announced casting for two of the show’s leads! Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Betty and Jughead!

Lili Reinhart, whom you may know from Surviving Jack, will be playing continual Archie love interest, Betty Cooper. According Deadline Hollywood, the version of Betty on this show is:

[S]weet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome with a huge crush on her longtime best friend, Archie. Tired of being the perfect daughter, student, sister, etc., she turns to her new friend, Veronica, for life advice — much to the consternation of her emotionally brittle mother.

DRAMA.

Playing the role of Archie bestie Jughead is Cole Sprouse, whom you (or your kids/younger siblings) may know from The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody. Jughead is described thusly:

Jughead Jones is a heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews. He is still smarting from the rift that took place between the two.

OK…so I guess they’re not besties anymore? MORE DRAMA.

This show definitely seems to be a more subversive take on the world of Archie. It’ll be interesting to see how Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, chief creative officer of Archie Comics who wrote Riverdale, and Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter create this non-superhero comic world for television.

What do you think of these casting choices? Will you be watching the Archie drama unfold? Let’s chat in the comments below!
