Entertainment Weekly has reported that Robin Williams was found dead at his home this morning in Tiburon, California. According to Huffington Post, authorities say that the “apparent cause of death was suicide.” The actor’s publicist issued this statement:
Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.
Williams’ wife Susan Schneider issued a statement to Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times:
This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one if its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.
Obviously, there are no words for what a tragic and untimely death this is, but it would feel wrong not to say what a profound impact Williams and his work has had on me personally, and I’m sure on many of our readers. I suspect all of us have moments from his films or comedy that we can automatically recall to make us laugh, or cry, or feel inspired. Williams’ legacy will be profound, and profoundly personal for many of us. We at The Mary Sue wish the best for his family and friends during this difficult time. We will continue to update this story as more details emerge.
