Marvel has put out a press release for the start of production on Captain Marvel, and as part of that announcement, they’ve included some new cast information and a plot new summary. This latest announcement doesn’t provide us with a ton of new information, but it does seem to confirm that we’re getting the full Kree-Skrull War plot.

Here’s the summary: “Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

We already knew that Captain Marvel would be a ’90s flick, including in its hairstyles and its action-movie homages, and that Carol Danvers would become involved in the Kree-Skrull war, so we can safely assume that’s what the “galactic war between two alien races” refers to.

The cast further solidifies this. Marvel announced that the cast would include “Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.”

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou both played high-ranking Kree. Lee Pace played Ronan the Accuser, and Djimon Hounsou played Korath the Pursuer. I think it’s relatively safe to assume that they’ll both be reprising their roles. We also know from earlier announcements that Gemma Chan will play Minn-Erva, a Kree geneticist and spy. So there will be plenty of representatives of the Kree in the film, but who’s playing a Skrull? More importantly, which seemingly human character is going to turn out to be a Skrull?

Clark Gregg was also included in the cast, so I’m pretty positive he’ll reprise his role as Agent Coulson. Given that we’re also going to see Samuel L. Jackson as a young Nick Fury, it seems fitting that we’d also get a young version of his co-recruiter Agent Coulson.
