Yesterday, it was reported that Joss Whedon officially stepped down from the Batgirl movie. The director in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter explained the move, saying “it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story.”
SYFY Wire has since reported that it seemed like Whedon did indeed have a story—reportedly a retelling of the 1967 story by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino that introduced Barbara Gordon, “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl.” However, for whatever reason, it fell through or didn’t work out. The more immediate question is who will be penning the superhero story now? Could Warner Bros. take this as an opportunity to bring on a female writer?
Enter Bad Feminist and Black Panther: World of Wakanda author Roxane Gay, who tweeted this out last night.
Hey @DCComics I can write your batgirl movie, no prob.

It sounds like Gay definitely has a story. In response, VP of DC WellsEntertainment/Warners Bros. Entertainment Michele Wells replied:
If you’re serious…contact me. [email protected]

Yes I am serious. I will email you.

While it’s too early to say where this interaction will go, it’s an exciting idea and I’d be really happy to see lots of women on the Batgirl team. What do you think about the possibility of Roxane Gay writing a Batgirl movie?
