Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently sat down with Stephen Colbert to introduce him to her workout routine. The 85-year-old Justice, who reminds us that she and Biggie are both known as Notorious because they’re “born and bred in Brooklyn, New York,” walked Colbert through the stretches, weightlifting, and mobility exercises that have kept her spry all these years.
Obviously, my favorite part of this video is watching Ruth Bader Ginsburg work out in a sweatshirt that reads, “Super Diva.” However, my second-favorite part is watching her eyes light up as she spies a legal argument. Colbert jokingly asks her to help solve the question: “Is a hot dog a sandwich?” And you can immediately see that she’s game.
“You’re asking me?” She grins. “Well, you tell me what a sandwich is, and then I’ll tell you if a hot dog is a sandwich.”
“A sandwich is two pieces of bread, with almost any type of filling in between, as long as it’s not more bread.”
“You said ‘two pieces of bread.’ Does that include a roll that’s cut open, but still not completely?”
“…A sub sandwich is not split, and yet it is a sandwich.”
“Yes.”
“So then a hot dog is a sandwich?”
“On your definition, yes, it is.”
“Well played, Lady Justice.”
Other choice quotes include Colbert asking her, “What’s Rihanna really like?” and Justice Ginsburg responding, “I’d like to find out.” (Please make this so, universe.) Or Colbert asking what music she likes to work out to, and Justice Ginsburg insisting on opera.
But the most telling moment comes when Colbert jokes that Justice Ginsburg and Biggie also had another thing in common—”You’re both implicated in the murder of Tupac.” She does not respond. She simply makes this face.
That’s not a denial, RBG!
If you’d like to see more of her legal and physical workouts, Justice Ginsburg is also the subject of a forthcoming documentary, RBG, which will be available in theaters in limited release on May 4, 2018.
