Still Star-Crossed, a young adult novel by Melinda Taub that takes place shortly after the events of Romeo and Juliet, will soon get the Shondaland treatment on ABC. Variety reports that Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Heather Mitchell are all on board to adapt this story, which — according the Amazon summary of the book — describes an arranged marriage between Benvolio and Romeo’s former crush, Rosaline. According to that same synopsis, Rosaline is Juliet’s cousin, which was probably not canon in the original (or else you’d think Romeo’s buds would have mentioned it, plus the whole crush-on-a-Capulet thing would have been far less exceptional if it were a pattern).

It sounds pretty silly, but so far, this obscure Romeo and Juliet fanfic has a handful of positive reviews and apparently Shonda Rhimes saw something valuable in it — and my default position is to trust her judgment here. What do you think, though? Have you read this book? Do you plan to give this adaptation a shot?
