Senator Elizabeth Warren pulled absolutely zero punches today when asked about the Kevin McCarthy tapes. She told CNN’s State of the Union that “Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor.” And included that she thought it was “outrageous.”
She was referring to the reporting from The New York Times that included audio that revealed House Minority Leader McCarthy caught in a lie about Jan 6. According to the tapes, after the attack on the Capitol, McCarthy said that his “recommendation” would be for then-president Donald Trump to resign. This clearly contradicts McCarthy’s many denials that he would ever push for Trump’s resignation.
Not only did Warren call McCarthy a liar and a traitor, but she correctly called out that his lies are also indicative of the corruption inherent in the GOP and particularly regarding Jan 6. She said, “That is really the illness that pervades Republican leadership right now. They say one thing to the American public and something else in private.”
She went on to say “They understand that it is wrong what happened—an attempt to overthrow our government—and the Republicans instead want to continue to try to figure out how to make [the] 2020 election different instead of spending their energy on how it is that we go forward in order to build an economy, in order to make this country work better for the people who sent us to Washington. Shame on Kevin McCarthy.”
Honestly, Elizabeth Warren is right and she should say it. But also, can we expect anything more from the GOP at this point? They know what they did, and so far no action has been taken against them in any meaningful way (except for Marjorie Taylor Greene who is the clowniest clown to ever clown). While Warren’s words might feel good, they are also only cold comfort.
