Cautiously Optimistic

The queen of movie science fiction herself has joined the already star studded cast of Neill Blomkamp‘s next project Chappie.

The basic gist of Chappie, from Deadline:

After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.

Blomkamp’s favorite, Sharlto Copley, will voice Chappie, with Hugh Jackman and Dev Patel also on hand.

While District 9 remains one of the best science fiction films of the last decade, this summer’s Elysium, while highly anticipated, based on Blomkamp’s previous work, was largely seen as a big let down. Weaver’s involvement is a ray of hope as far as I’m concerned. The actress doesn’t pick just any science fiction series that comes her way. For every Alien: Resurrection and Avatar, there’s a Cabin in the Woods, a Wall-E, a Holes, Galaxy Quest, Ghostbusters, or Alien.

That’s a picking a film track record that I’m willing to follow, at least until reviews come out.
