I’ve never really considered the motion capture work that must have gone into Benedict Cumberbatch’s role in The Hobbit, but this clip from The Desolation of Smaug DVD is a reminder of the part’s demands. Delivering quality voice work while capturing a dragon’s snakey physicality can’t be easy (especially without other actors or sets to work off of), but it seems Cumbersmaug handled filming like a champ. A faintly ridiculous, mildly terrifying champ.
