I have a major weakness for match games. They’re on my phone. They’re downloaded on my consoles. If it’s a game that lets me make various combinations via brightly colored blocks and chill music, there’s a pretty good chance imma buy it.
Now take that and add queer, supernatural POC of varying body types, the ability to decorate your bedroom, and potential romance options. That’s what Spirit Swap: Lofi Beats to Match-3 To is.
The game has been made for me specifically is what I’m saying.
Cast spells, be queer, & crash the biggest concert of the year! Spirit Swap is an action-puzzle game set in a lush, narrative-driven world of witchy demons. Samar is a young witch working the spirit-swapping night shift in the eastern outskirts of Demashq. A recent spike in spirits crossing over from another dimension breaks the chill atmosphere of their night shift. With her trusty familiarZ by her side, she sets off into the city to find out what’s happened. With the popular band, 5SOME, scheduled to kick off their big comeback tour in Demashq, Samar needs to work quickly before the city is overrun with stans and spirits alike….not to mention, they’ve got a pizza party to plan!
Developed by Soft Not Weak, a studio that’s equally as inclusive as the game they’re creating, the game has managed to take my love for puzzle games and turn them into something magically creative.
And gay.
Very, very gay.
It’s a match game with catchy as hell music, fantastic character designs, and a cassette tape deck turns into a witch’s familiar, how could I not get attached to it on sight?
Here’s some details about the game:
–Match to the beat as you reassemble lost spirits, and enjoy a custom lofi soundtrack by the incredible Meltycanon and eyesonbrandon.
–Cast powerful spells. Arrange spirits into special patterns to unlock potent powers!
–Compete in local VS mode! Everything is chill until it gets permanently unchill….
–Enjoy over 5 unique game modes, including Time Attack, Score Attack, and Survival.
–Bond with a cast of witches and demons. Plan a pizza party together, crash a concert, maybe even smooch in our extensive Story Mode!
–Decorate your bedroom. Earn trinkets and keepsakes as you play, then place them in Samar’s room to affect the game!
–No microtransactions here. Spirit Swap is a premium game, which means you’ll be able to enjoy it without worrying about hidden costs.
–Queer and diverse joy. Much like the cast of Spirit Swap, our team is also is queer, Black, and/or POC, and it’s well past time we see ourselves experiencing happiness in media. This is a slice-of-life story for players needing a relaxing experience!
–A fresh look at Middle Eastern fantasy by creators FROM the region. Spirit Swap is set in a fictional city inspired by the Levant, a region rarely explored (in a positive light) in games.
I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I’m beyond ready for a POC led experience that’s fun and positive. Give me all the slice-of-life storylines, I wanna see loveable POC hanging out in bakeries so their friends can test out their tastebuds.
And just who are these friends? More importantly, who is our main character? Here’s who we’ve been introduced to so far:
- Samar on Main
- The Rest of the Spirit Swap Crew
I wanna hang out and/or date everyone. Multiple times, please and thank you.
The best part? This isn’t everybody. There’s the potential for more characters, and more romance options, depending on how far the Kickstarter goes.
Spirit Swap: Can I Smooch them???
Let’s talk about the romance element. pic.twitter.com/vsLm7Wn3u1— Soft Not Weak (@SoftNotWeak) April 12, 2021
The Kickstarter launched today and will be running for 30 days. There are a ton of rewards to get excited about—besides just the game, that is. Limited-edition pins, the soundtrack, an artbook, there’s even a plus-size shirt because, as I said, this game is clearly made with me in mind.
Oh, and did I mention there’s a demo? That you can check out today in celebration of the Kickstarter?
You can check out the Kickstarter campaign right now (which also has a link to the demo)!
