In the latest episode of Spy x Family, we got to see Loid “I can’t afford to catch feelings for this fake family, oops, I’m catching feelings” Forger take a major step in his mission. Loid, who is known as “Twilight” in the spy world, has to get inside the prestigious Eden Academy in order to get close to a man named Donovan Desmond. Loid has succeeded in getting a wife (Yor, who just so happens to be an assassin) and a daughter (Anya, who just so happens to be a telepath). With a made-up story about Yor being his second wife after the death of Anya’s mother, all that’s left is to get Anya through the interview process so she can be enrolled in the school. However, all of the training in the world couldn’t prepare Loid for his biggest threat: a bitter-ass school official.

The fourth episode of Spy x Family is full of comedic hijinks that illustrate just how much Loid prepared for this interview. Eden Academy might say the interview starts when you talk to the school officials, but in reality, it starts as soon as you step onto the school grounds. There are teachers grading the families based on their appearance and how they conduct themselves, so Loid has made sure to prepare Yor and Anya for anything. Anything, in this case, ranges from paying respects to the founder of the school, to having multiple changes of clothes for when wild animals run wild, forcing your wife to hit a cow’s pressure points and chalk it up to being good at yoga.

The Forgers move on to the interview process and are prepared for the questions they’re asked about their home life. Unfortunately, one of the school officials (Master Swan) decides to ask extremely cruel, invasive questions because he’s bothered by picture-perfect families due to his own family falling apart. Not only does Swan ask Yor about taking on the “extra baggage” of being Loid’s second wife, but he also insults her for not being the one who cooks because something something “woman’s place” something something. Loid and Yor grin and bear it until Swan turns his attention to Anya because this crumpled potato head man has the audacity to ask Anya which mother she likes better, her new one (Yor) or her deceased one.

The entire series up until this point has very much been an “I don’t have feelings for my fake family” adventure with little moments happening to show that Loid absolutely cares for Yor and Anya – especially Anya. Yor is also using Loid and Anya as a cover, but she’s clearly growing fond of them, too, and there’s no better example than this moment with Master Swan.

Loid and Yor are the anime parents we deserve

I love how Yor was immediately ready to kill this man because of how vicious he was toward Anya. Yor had managed to keep herself under control when Swan made disparaging remarks toward her, but being nasty toward a child activated her “assassinate this man” switch. What’s really great to watch, though, is Loid telling himself to calm down while CLEARLY getting ready to throw hands. He’s the main one who’s been spending the series telling himself to not get attached, only to be more than willing to risk it all for Anya.

Swan asking that kind of question is awful for any child, but Loid knows that Anya has had multiple families send her back to the rundown orphanage she came from, and we the viewer know that she’s been experimented on because of her psychic abilities. Loid ends up telling the school that this is no place for HIS child if they’re going to pick at her in such a disgusting way – mission be damned. Of course, he stresses about it later, but at that moment he truly did act in a way you’d hope a father would.

An elegant punch to the face

Luckily for Swan, Loid simply punches a table instead of smashing his fist into his nose. However, we still do get a satisfying punch, because Henry Henderson (one of the other school officials who was at the interview) delivers a mighty ELEGANT blow. While seeing Loid or Yor do it would’ve been great, there’s something quite rewarding in seeing one of Swan’s own colleagues turn against him.

That’ll teach you to talk shit about anime’s favorite family of the season.
