The great Star Trek Into Darkness marketing drought is almost over. It’s been announced that an extended preview of the film—the first nine minutes, actually—will play in front of screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on approximately 500 IMAX screens when it opens a month from now. It’s similar to what Warner Bros. did in airing the first scene of The Dark Knight Rises in front of IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, except that the Star Trek scene will be in 3D, too.
After months of nothing but a few weird set photos and a sneak peek that was only three frames long, we’ll finally be seeing some new Star Trek footage. Finally. J.J. Abrams, this wait has been too cruel.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes out on December 14th, and only IMAX screens will have the Star Trek Into Darkness footage, so you’re going to have to shell out the extra dough if you want to get your dose of lens flare (in 3D!) before the movie comes out on May 17th, 2013.
