Visual parallels in movies are often an intricate affair, with gargantuan efforts placed behind them to make sure they’re just so. Imagine, then, how much effort it might’ve taken on George Lucas’ part to introduce visual parallels between the Star Wars trilogies. While a few of these visuals may seem coincidental, they’re just all so similar that it’s hard to deny that it took a measured hand to create these parallels.
Personally speaking, I always get a neat little thrill out of things like this. Tumblr is littered with GIF comparisons of parallels, and it tickles me when they come across my dashboard. There’s a lot to be said for the subtle exploitation of your subconscious connections with these scenes. You might not understand that they’re parallels at the time, but somewhere in the back of your mind, they’re stirring up echoes of emotions that you might have attached to the scene in question. I can enjoy good cinematography, and I enjoy it even more when that cinematography gets some extra love this way.
