We’re a week away from the premiere of season six of Outlander, Starz’s smash hit romantic time travel series based on the novels of Diana Gabaldon. But there’s more in the works, as Starz is actively developing an Outlander prequel series. Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts will write and executive produce the prequel.
While the plot is being kept strictly under wraps, Gabaldon is currently working on a prequel novel centered on Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, the parents of Outlander‘s Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Gabaldon has already published a prequel novella Virgins as part of the Dangerous Women cross-genre anthology in 2013, edited by edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois. Virgins follows young Scottish Highlanders Jamie Fraser and Ian Murray ask they work as mercenaries in 1740s France.
But the prequel series could also follow neither of these narratives in favor of something entirely new. As for Outlander, season 6 premieres on March 6, and is based on Gabaldon’s book A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The series has already been renewed for season 6, which will be based on the book An Echo in the Bone.
