Just yesterday, Sherlock star Martin Freeman seemed to be talking out of turn yet again by suggesting the series would return first for a Christmas Special before an official Season 4. Somewhere, the word “bollocks” was shouted and today, Steven Moffat has made an official announcement on Sherlock’s return.

Previously, Rebecca wagered we’d get the next season of Sherlock in the year 2038. That was the last time Freeman hinted as some sort of one-off special to take place before Season 4. However, just yesterday, we saw a post on Nerdist referencing an interview he did with The Telegraph in which he specifically said, “If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.” He also added that filming in early 2015 was “pretty likely.”

That brings us to today. According to Variety, Sherlock Season 4 will indeed start filming in January of 2015. Moffat said, “A special, plus a new series of three episodes — it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”

Executive Producer Sue Vertue added, “It’s taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we’re thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again.”

Variety mentions it’s the special which will be shooting in January, with the regular episodes filmed later in the year so based on all we’ve heard so far it seems the next Sherlock we’ll see will be Christmas of 2015 with Season 4 airing in 2016. Quite a wait but maybe not quite as long as many of us thought.
