Halloween is right around the corner, and that usually means a barrage of horror films. This year is no different, but one film in particular—Stonehearst Asylum—has caught my eye. Based off of “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether” by Edgar Allan Poe, the story follows Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) as he gets his first job after medical school at an asylum. Oh, and did I mention it takes place during the 19th century? The movie also has quite the acting list, featuring as it does Charles Dance, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, Kate Beckinsale, and David Thewlis. Yes, it does seem to have a lot of the typical tropes of an asylum movie, but it looks so far like it captures them in an interesting way. The only way to make this movie look even more appealing would be to somehow add the glory that is Vincent Price!
Maybe I’m biased. After all, I love asylum horror movies and I love Edgar Allan Poe. I was that strange kid in high school begging for Poe stories for birthday presents. We’ll just have to wait and see! Stonehearst Asylum will be out in theaters and on demand on October 24th.
