Obi-Wan Kenobi and the kids from Stranger Things

The Fandom War Has Begun: ‘Stranger Things’ vs ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

The news broke that Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi was shifting to a May 27th release date and while we instantly got excited at the news that we’d also get two episodes that first day, we had to stop and think about why we were excited about May 27th in the first place. And then we remembered: Stranger Things 4. The highly anticipated part 1 of season 4 drops on Netflix the same day as the beginning of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Cue fans anxiously crying over what to watch first.

As a huge fan of both properties, I get it. How are we to prioritize when we’ve been waiting so long for both of these to come out? With Obi-Wan Kenobi, it is only the first two episodes, but then we’ll want to talk about it a lot. Or if we start with Stranger Things, we’ll have to binge the entire season before returning to Tatooine with Ewan McGregor.

So let’s come up with a pros and cons list to try and figure out the best course of action for May 27th.

Pros to starting with Obi-Wan Kenobi

The series begins airing on May 27th and only two episodes will drop that day. So, in theory, you can wake up and watch these two at the crack of dawn and be done with them before diving into Stranger Things 4. Most of the Disney+ shows are under an hour so, in theory, watching Obi-Wan Kenobi might then only take you less than two hours to finish, and then you won’t have to worry about someone spoiling the show for you.

Cons to starting with Obi-Wan Kenobi

You won’t be able to really sit and enjoy it or talk about it that much because then you’re in Stranger Things 4 mode trying to hurry up and not get spoiled there. While it might only be two episodes, it is still a huge deal for fans of Obi-Wan as a character, and so we’ll want to talk about the series online but it’ll be hard to enjoy it when we’re worrying about a different show.

Pros to starting with Stranger Things 4

The pro here is not getting spoiled. If you recall, the internet at large was screaming about Hopper during Stranger Things 3 without a care for those who didn’t stay up all night binge-watching it. So if you start with Stranger Things 4, you can get through the show without someone spoiling you.

Cons to starting with Stranger Things 4

Well, it’s a much bigger commitment than starting with Obi-Wan Kenobi and you’re also delaying your Ewan McGregor dreams even further. So you’d avoid spoilers for part 1 of Stranger Things 4, but you might end up getting spoiled on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

____________

The solution? I guess just split-screen your life and watch them at the same time! Or pray to the gods that one of the streaming services has a delay and makes the decision for you, because choosing between them isn’t going to be an easy choice.

That or just take the day off work, put your phone on do not disturb, and lock yourself away until you finish them both.
