A new documentary titled Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is set to release in theaters this fall and is easily one of the best documentaries of the year. Telling the story of Reeve’s rise to fame, his work outside of the Superman movies, and diving into his life post his horse riding accident, the movie paints a clear picture of who Christopher Reeve was.

I am someone who loved Reeve very dearly. The Superman movies were a staple in my household growing up, and I went on to love movies like Deathtrap and his theatre work. When he came back to the world of Clark Kent as Dr. Virgil Swann on Smallville, I was as happy as could be. I remember where I was the day he died, and how upset I was. If you ask my family, they probably remember 12-year-old me riding around on my scooter, crying.

That’s just my story with Reeve. Most Superman fans have their own story about him, and it is all rooted in our love for the actor. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story gives us a completely new look at the actor, and the trailer for it is emotional.

Here is everything we know about the new documentary.

An emotional trailer

If you only saw him as Superman/Clark Kent, you probably didn’t know a lot else about Reeve. The documentary is promising to give fans a deeper look into who he was as a man, a father, and a husband, all before his work as an activist. It truly is remarkable how the movie weaves in the public perception of Reeve with what fans knew him for.

The film is described as follows: “The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.”

It goes on to talk about how his life changed post his accident: “After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family.”

When can we watch it?

The documentary is a Warner Bros. Pictures and Fathom Events collaboration and will be released in theaters on September 21 for a special event. There will be a special encore presentation of the movie on Reeve’s birthday, September 25.

This is one you will not want to miss, but also, bring tissues. Reeve was a remarkable man and if you weren’t a fan of his before, you will be after Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.
