One Love, “a student-led movement to activate, educate, and empower others to change the statistics around relationship violence” created a video called “Because I love you” to show how “a simple phrase can take on a different meaning in an unhealthy relationship.” It begins with phrases that seem innocent, like “Because I love you, I waited for you after chem lab” and “I just want to be with you” and moves to sentences like “Because I love you, I smashed your phone.”

It’s a powerful video that shows how abuse can escalate and how damaging it can be to call these actions “love.” I also appreciate how varied the actors were, to show that anyone can be abusive and anyone can face abuse.

What did you think about the video?
