After nearly 3 years, the long-awaited fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things drops in two parts, first on May 27 and then on July 1. And with the news that season 5 will be the show’s last, fans are naturally wondering whether series creators the Duffer brothers are working on any spinoffs. Given the massive global popularity of the series, it seems likely that we haven’t seen the last of the Upside Down.
The duo teased plans in an interview with SFX Magazine via CBR, where Matt Duffer said, “We have some ideas, … In terms of if we were to do any sort of a spinoff, or any continuation of Stranger Things, for us the bar was always, ‘Is the idea exciting enough that we feel the pull of wanting to do it again?’ I want to feel the pull of, ‘God, I really want to do this. I feel really, really excited about this.’ So that’s why we’re being careful about what that is and whether we move forward with it or not.”
Ross Duffer added, “The key for us is that it needs to feel like its own distinct thing, not that we’re just retreading what we’ve already done, because what would be the point of that?” He continued, “I do think we have something that could be pretty exciting. So we’ll see.” The duo added that while they would be “heavily involved” in the development of any spinoffs, they would leave the showrunner job to someone else.
There are no details yet on the planned spinoff, but there’s many different ways the series could go. Given that the Duffers want something distinct and different, it’s a safe bet that any spinoff would feature an all-new cast and location. One possible direction could follow the runaways from Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) aka Eight’s street gang who Eleven met up with in season 2. The test subjects who were experimented on by Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) made a pact to hunt down and seek revenge on the adults who took them. Who knows how many more test subjects are out there?
