The Hunger Games Felt a Lot Jauntier in 1992

Remember the action movie greats of 1992? Lethal Weapon 3. Army of Darkness. The Hunger Games. Okay, not that last one—but what if Katniss Everdeen’s adventures had come out in the early 90s, as opposed to the late aughts? They might look a little something like the video above, made by Vulture.

There’s a lot to love about this throwback trailer. The corny title card! The fuzzy VHS effects! The fact that only Donald Sutherland’s name-drop sounds right! But the sound design sticks out the most to me—both the spoken dialogue and the musical interludes used. I think I might like this music even better than whatever actually ended up in The Hunger Games. It’s got that special something—that straight-to-video urgency.
