One of the best parts of the ad campaign for The Martian has been its in-universe “behind the scenes” peeks at the astronauts before their journey to Mars. The official trailer is still incredibly neat, but there’s something else about these funny little side trailers that puts it above the rank-and-file trailer blast that usually accompanies movies.
This trailer, for example, has a story of its own to tell. After 10 days in isolation, each of the Ares 3 crew is interviewed by a psychologist to check on their mental health. Everyone is so spectacularly in character, but it’s Jessica Chastain as the badass flight commander who brings it. She’s singled out for being the first female commander of an Ares mission, so she’s asked if that puts any added pressure on her.
This question echoes the kinds of weird, sexist questions that female actresses (or engineers, or artists, or writers…) get asked in interviews all the time. Of course, her response absolutely kills it. Totally reminds me of Commander freakin’ Shepard, man.
The Martian launches October 2nd.
