The Mary Sue is so pleased to be able to exclusively announce Lucy Knisley’s new graphic novel, Something New from First Second Books! Check out this first look and details!
Growing up a shy tomboy obsessed with food and comics, weddings were somewhat of an annoyance to me when I worked for my mom’s catering company. I never imagined my own, so when suddenly I’m blissfully engaged to a man I adore, I’m forced to realize that I don’t know a thing about how to go about planning and executing a wedding. But armed with the steely obsessive nature of an artist, betrothed to a logical and practical engineer, and daughter to an ambitious caterer, this wedding is going to be designed, engineered, and catered down to the last detail.
A story about letting go of an ideal, embracing a fantasy, and getting to make a TON of stuff over the course of a year, most of which will only last a day. This is the book I wish I’d had at the start of all this – the hope is that I pass on what I have learned (and am learning) to future clueless (or somewhat less clueless) brides to help them breathe, relax, and laugh throughout their own process.
First Second Books Senior Editor Calista Brill was the one who acquired the book. She told us, “I’m so excited to be working with Lucy on the mother of all wedding books! When a cartoonist/puppeteer/foodie sets out to plan her own wedding you know it’s going to be awesome, and this delightful graphic novel will document every stage. Each chapter of Something New will cover a different challenge on the path to getting hitched, and each chapter is accompanied by gorgeously illustrated instructions for a DIY project that Lucy is undertaking for her wedding. ”
Knisley is also a guest of honor at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Make sure to keep an eye out for our exclusive interview from Sam Maggs about this new project later this week!
Lucy Knisley is the bestselling author/artist of a number of graphic novels, including Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, an Alex Award-winning graphic novel about growing up in the food industry. Her popular comics are honest and endearing, earning her a loyal readership and well-loved online presence (most notably, through her web series, “Stop Paying Attention”). She is three months out from her wedding, and still has to make a crazy amount of things before the approaching date.
