Daisy Ridley is reportedly in final talks to play the titular role in Ophelia, an adaptation of Hamlet that tells the play’s story from the viewpoint of Ophelia. The film will be based on the YA novel by Lisa Klein, and directed by Clare McCarthy; Naomi Watts will star as Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude. While Hamlet and Ophelia’s romantic history is left somewhat ambiguous in Hamlet, The Verge says the two will be “fully involved” in Ophelia, and that the adaptation will make its titular character more outspoken and less of a tragic figure than she is in the play.
