By now, you’ve probably heard about presidential hopeful and firing committee leader Donald Trump and his quip that Megyn Kelly of Fox News was on her period during the GOP debate, a quip which got him disinvited to Saturday’s RedState Gathering. But have you heard about how people are responding to it online?
As a response to Trump’s offensive joke, Amber Gordon of Femsplain has started “Periods Are Not An Insult,” a Twitter campaign that serves to convince Trump that, yes, periods are no joking matter. On the official website, which Amber says she built while “on [her] period and listening to ‘Red’ by Cher,” you can choose from different period-related tweets directed to Trump, all of which include #periodsarenotaninsult as well as several red emojis (a kiss, a siren, a volcano, an exclamation point, a rose, a red balloon). The hope is to, well, flood his feed with period talk.
What’s great about this campaign is it’s totally inclusive, providing tweets for those of us who actually have periods (“Hey @realDonaldTrump, I’m on my period right now.” and “Hey @realDonaldTrump, I’m getting my period soon.”) as well as those who don’t get them anymore, or won’t get one ever (“Hey @realDonaldTrump, I don’t get a period but I also don’t use that as an insult.”). There’s also a section of the page that invites visitors to share their personal period insult stories (contributions will be featured on the site at a future date).
Now we just have to wait for Trump to make a joke about this and how it’s making all our cycles sync up.
