Don’t worry, guys, Eddie Brock is coming back! It has been announced that we’ll be getting a third Venom movie after all. With the mixed response to the series’ second film, Let There Be Carnage, there was a bit of a tossup as to whether Sony would continue Eddie’s story (especially since they teased him meeting Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the end-credits scene).
So what do we know? That it’s happening. And that’s about it. News broke at CinemaCon 2022 that the third Venom movie is in the works, and after where Let There Be Carnage left off, it might mean that we could finally see a connection between Eddie Brock and Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
The lack of the comic book dynamic
The first Venom movie worked because it was Tom Hardy’s chaos, mixed with him talking to himself and Venom being in love with Eddie, and had all of us fascinated with this take on the Eddie/Venom duo. While I personally liked Let There Be Carnage a lot, it was a bit of a letdown after the success that Venom found. And that may be due to the fact that we still have yet to see Eddie and Spider-Man even meet. In the comics, Venom is a foe for Peter Parker by first taking him as a host. That was clearly changed in the Tom Hardy universe, having Venom meet Eddie first.
It’s not a bad thing. I love following just Eddie Brock and having this story separate from Spider-Man, but it does limit the amount of comics they can pull from and the world they’re building, because he is, at the end of the day, a Spider-Man villain who has yet to meet Spider-Man.
It also brings up the question on everyone’s mind after No Way Home: How did Eddie and Venom even know who Peter Parker was? Well, according to an interview with Variety, screenwriter Chris McKenna says it’s because of the symbiote’s knowledge. “The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes,” McKenna revealed. “Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection.”
What could Venom 3 be?
Hopefully, Venom 3 takes us into a world where Eddie Brock is working for the Daily Bugle under J. Jonah Jameson, and if we can’t get him meeting with Spider-Man, maybe a hint that he knows more about the webbed hero. At the end of No Way Home, Eddie leaves behind a piece of Venom in Peter Parker’s universe, indicating that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peter will have to take on Venom in a way that we’re more used to seeing from the comics, but does that mean that it will tie into this Venom sequel?
All these unanswered questions are just the tip of the iceberg, but then again, what worked for both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage was that we went into these movies to have fun and not be so into how it connects to some larger piece of the MCU, so maybe we’ll just get more of that. All in all, we’re getting a Venom 3, and that’s something to be excited for!
