We got an early look at the season two premiere episode of History’s Vikings, which airs tonight at 10:00PM ET. We won’t give too much away, but there will be blood. Lots. Of. Blood. Check out the trailer.

On this week’s episode of The Geekosystem Podcast, I included Vikings as part of my weekly Editors’ Pick. When History reached out to us about getting an early look at the first few episodes of this season. I wasn’t familiar with the show. Thankfully it’s all on Amazon Prime Instant Video so I got caught up pretty quickly, and it’s great.

As I said in my pick, it’s similar to Game of Thrones (pronounced quickly as one word) in that it’s a period piece centered around power struggles. There’s no fantasy aspect like Game of Thrones, but History has taken some of the actual history of the show a little liberally. Considering it’s fiction, I think that’s fine.

Season Two picks up some time after after the finale of Season One, but it’s difficult to tell just how far. One problem with the show is that the timeline is a little confusing. It’s compressed for narrative’s sake, which makes it hard to tell how much time has passed between episodes, or sometimes even scenes.

As for the premiere episode for this season, let’s just say the struggle between Ragnar and Rollo has… escalated. The episode is titled “Brother’s War,” so that should give you an idea. There’s a fair amount of warring between some of the female characters as well, which is something else the show does really well. It seems like this season is going to focus a lot more on Ragnar’s family dynamic than his place in viking society.

Be sure to tune in tonight! I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will tell you my favorite character gets brutally attacked. I just won’t tell you who that character is, or if they live or die. Let’s talk about it tomorrow.
