Wanda Maximoff looking upset in WandaVision

WandaVision Static: We Need to Talk About Today’s Big WandaVision Development

Marvel and Disney+’s WandaVision released its fifth episode today and promptly shut down any “haters”—meaning it was absolutely incredible and brought us an entirely new layer to obsess over. So, let’s get into one of the biggest twists from this week’s episode and how it plays into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at large.

**Spoilers for this week’s episode of WandaVision lie within.**

As we know, Wanda manifested her twins Billy and Tommy during “Now in Color” and brought up the fact that she was also a twin. She talked about Pietro for the first time since probably Age of Ultron in a memorable way, and it reminded us that she is still coping with his death in her own way.

This week though, Wanda watched as her twin boys aged up repeatedly—watched as she went from a mother of newborn twins to a mother of young children and then ten-year-old boys. Tommy and Billy hid away from their real problems by just making themselves older, and when the two were worried about Wanda and Vision fighting, they got to hear their mother talk about her own sibling, driving home the fact that something that has changed throughout the show and how Wanda is now talking about Pietro Maximoff.

When Wanda first had Billy and Tommy, she brought up her twin brother to Geraldine and spoke about him in the past tense. She had a brother. But in “On a Very Special Episode …” she’s talking about him to the twins and talks about Pietro as if he is still alive but very far away. So my question is: What changed?

Well … we sort of know what changed, since Pietro shows up at her door.

I have so many theories about why Evan Peters as Pietro (or Peter) is there, but first, let’s talk about that. EVAN PETERS OF FOX’S X-MEN SHOWED UP AT THE END AS PIETRO/QUICKSILVER.

In Age of Ultron, Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Quicksilver, but died at the hands of Ultron. So when it seemed more and more likely that Pietro would return to the MCU, the question became who would show up.

I was Team Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but Evan Peters was great as the Fox version of the character. And the only reason I really wanted Taylor-Johnson’s return over Peters was that he was the MCU version. So to see Peters show up at the end of this week’s episode was a fun treat!

What it does though is bring up about 30 more questions for me. Does this mean that Wanda can recognize anyone from a different universe? She DID seem to recognize him when he showed up, despite not looking the same as her Pietro. I say “seem” because she didn’t actually say who he was until he said she was her long-lost brother, but maybe she already knew. Could this be a different Wanda than we’ve had in the MCU prior? What does this mean for the MCU Quicksilver? Will I get any of these answers or just continue to scream into the void for the rest of the season?

While I’m excited to see Peters get his time again as Quicksilver, does this mean that the rest of the Fox X-Men will become canon, as has been rampantly theorized? My new theory is that Wanda erases them and creates the new mutants so Disney can cast whoever they want, but that’s also me wishful thinking.

What Evan Peters joining WandaVision does do is provide me with a week’s worth of theories to keep me going until the next episode. I just want to understand how he’s going to play into the larger world of the X-Men, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.
