If you’re anything like me, sitting at the top of your list of most anticipated shows of 2022 are Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor — shining in all their “we’re bringing back some of the most beloved characters we have ever introduced and we know we have you” glory. And while we have already seen the epic trailer for Ewan McGregor’s triumphal return in Obi-Wan Kenobi and are now left counting down the days until its premiere on May 25th, we don’t have that many details yet on when Andor will be released. Or do we?
First, here’s what we know for sure — Andor will be a spy thriller, seeing Diego Luna back in his Rogue One role of rebel captain Cassian Andor. The series — which has already been greenlit for a second season ahead of its premiere — will have twelve episodes in total, all acting as a prequel to Rogue One, and while the characters are still largely undisclosed we know that the cast includes some heavy hitters like Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona and Forest Whitaker, reprising his Rogue One role of rebel leader Saw Gerrera.
For now, the only official information about Andor’s release date is that it will be in 2022, a year after it was originally planned in 2021 after production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the recent announcement for the premiere of Marvel’s Ms. Marvel series may have provided a bit more unintentional clarity about Disney+’s release calendar for the second half of this year.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is dropping at the end of May, and Ms. Marvel is going to immediately follow with its June premiere. The end of the year will instead be dedicated to the third season of The Mandalorian, which means that Andor is likely to kick off sometime around late Summer or early Autumn. A recent tweet by the Bespin Bulletin, reported by MovieWeb, cites August 2022 as the chosen month — a perfect timeframe to have Obi-Wan Kenobi wrapped up and Ms Marvel on its way to the season finale to make everyone’s attention focus on Andor.
This is something I personally will do, because I cannot stress enough how I have not known rest ever since I knew my eyes were going to be blessed again by Diego Luna being morally grey in space. Between that and the return to the Star Wars of Hayden Christensen, king of my pre-teen dreams, I might as well set Disney+ as the homepage of my browser and be done with it.
UPDATE: We finally have a release date! Andor will be available to stream on Disney+ on August 31, 2022.
UPDATED UPDATE: The latest trailer for Andor confirms that the first three episodes of the series will be on Disney+ on September 21, 2022.
