Steven Grant sad on Moon Knight

What Happened to Steven Grant in ‘Moon Knight’ Episode 5?

So Marvel’s Moon Knight episode 5 has left many of us emotionally drained. From exploring what started Marc’s dissociative identity disorder into the attempt for both Steven Grant and Marc Spector to balance their scales and reach A’Aru, we’ve been put through the ringer (emotionally speaking). But the show has left us with some unanswered questions that fans want answers to.

After spending weeks now with both Steven Grant and Marc Spector, we’ve come to love them both and want nothing but the best for them, but it doesn’t seem like Moon Knight is going to let them be happy. So, let’s talk about what happened to Steven Grant in episode 5.

First off: Is Steven Grant alive? I’m going to say yes because I don’t like thinking about the alternative. The reality is that we just don’t know. At the end of the episode, Steven fights the Duat for Marc, and in doing so falls overboard into the sands below. We see him try to make his way back to Marc, and we see Marc trying to stop the boat and go back for him, but it results in Steven turning to sand and seemingly dying. So that brings me to my second question: Will we see Steven Grant again?

The last we see of Marc, he’s made it to A’Aru and Steven has fallen to the Duat. Now the question is whether or not what happened on that journey would apply to them returning to the world of the living or not.

Steven’s journey

Throughout the episode, we saw as Steven began to understand his own history and how it was tied to Marc. While the episode was more about Marc understanding his own trauma and sharing it with Steven, it was still important to Steven because it informed his own history. It wasn’t just about Marc sharing with Steven what happened to him but instead was about Steven understanding how he came to be and the importance he has for Marc.

Learning about Marc’s brother and the trauma there with his death clearly wasn’t easy for Steven, and it wasn’t easy for him to learn that the mother he thought he spoke to every day was actually dead. He became hyper aware of his duty to Marc and the origin of Marc’s DID, and at one point, Steven even admitted that he thought he was the original.

He came full circle in a lot of ways, and it could be seen as the end of Steven Grant. I hope that isn’t true and that, when Marc returns to Khonshu, Steven comes with him, but the truth of it is that we just don’t know. There’s still the Jake Lockley of it all because we haven’t met him yet but we know he’s around, and I hope that doesn’t mean that the show will “kill” off Steven in order to let Jake front.

We’ll have to simply wait and see what the future holds for Steven Grant, but I hope it’s not just that sandy death.
