Fans of dystopian technology and haunted electronics rejoice! Netflix is bringing back ‘Black Mirror’ for a sixth season. The thriller anthology series, which debuted in 2011, has amassed a cult following thanks to its twisty and disturbing takes on the dangers of technology. A natural successor to series like ‘The Twilight Zone’, ‘Black Mirror’ quickly established itself as one of Netflix’s breakout series. It’s been three years since season 5 premiered in 2019.
In 2020, series creator Charlie Brooker discussed plans for season 6 with the Radio Times, saying “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.” This was, of course, during the first months of the pandemic, when the world was experiencing its own dystopian nightmare. In the meantime, Brooker created the star-studded Netflix comedy special “Death to 2020,” followed by “Death to 2021”.
In the past two years, Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones have set up a new production company, and signed on for a new season of ‘Black Mirror’. Details are being kept strictly under wraps, but we do know that season 6 will feature more episodes than season 5 (which had 3 in total). Sources say that season 6 will be “more cinematic in scope,” with each instalment being treated as as a movie. Black Mirror has always had solid production values, and dabbled with a feature-length installment with 2018’s interactive special “Bandersnatch“.
When Does Season 6 Premiere on Netflix?
Netflix has yet to release a premiere date for the next season, but we do know that the producers are currently casting the season. The earliest we’d likely see ‘Black Mirror’ again is the end of 2023, or early 2024. We’ll keep you updated as new rolls out.
