Bojji cooking something up in Ranking of Kings

Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘Ranking of Kings?’

Unlike American television—where a smash hit will generally secure a second season (with some exceptions, of course), the second season of a hit anime is anything but assured. A lot of the time, this has to do with the story arc. And some anime are just adapting 12 episodes worth of content. This is why many fans are concerned about Ranking of Kings, the breakout series of the winter 2021/2022 anime season. Episode 23 aired in March 2022, marking the end of the show’s first season. But darn it, we want more.

For those of us pining for a second season of Ranking of Kings, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that there is more of Sousuke Touka’s manga left to adapt. Not only that but the manga is still being published. The bad news is that, according to ShivSaga, there are presently 191 chapters of the manga. And the anime adapts up to chapter 156.

One reason this is difficult information to suss out, is that an English translation of Ranking of Kings is still very much in progress. The first seven volumes (out of twelve) have been translated into English by Japanese e-book publisher BookLive. However, Anime News Network reports that there have been so many errors in the translation, BookLive is suspending the English release for retranslation.

As of now, Wit Studio has not announced a second season of Ranking of Kings. Since there is more manga to adapt, and considering the anime’s popularity, a second season seems very, very likely. The bigger question, though, is when the second season would come out. We’re stuck in a bit of an Attack on Titan conundrum. Remember back in the 2010s, when we all had to wait for more manga to be written before more anime could be made? That’s why, despite premiering in 2014, Attack on Titan‘s four seasons have taken eight years to release.

Unfortunately, we may be looking at a similar situation for Ranking of Kings. Simply put, we may have to wait a couple of years for enough of the manga to release to provide adequate material for season two. And then, Wit will have to animate that material. Honestly, the absolute earliest we could be looking at is 2024. And I honestly worry that would be pushing it. We don’t want something like the original Fullmetal Alchemist series on our hands, do we? Not when we could wait for the manga to actually release and have Brotherhood.

This is not the information you wanted. I know. I want more Bojji and Kage in my life, too. But, alas, sometimes we must wait for nice things.
