Youtube is getting into the genre game with an impressive new teaser trailer for their sci-fi drama Origin. The series stars Potterverse alums Tom Felton and Natalia Tena as part of a group of strangers who wake up to find themselves abandoned on a space ship headed for a distant land. The series is written and executive produced by Mika Watkins (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man) and the pilot is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil series).
The ominous trailer is set to a haunting cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”, and features plenty of our favorite sci-fi tropes: a mysterious all-powerful corporation (Siren) set to explore and colonize a new Earth, hyper-sleep chambers, augmented reality sunglasses, and folks running down darkened hallways. There’s also a blink-and-you’ll miss it kiss between two female characters, which is cool. More queer sci-fi representation is never a bad thing! Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, said of the series, “Sci-fi and action adventure are huge on YouTube, and our audience will be intrigued by the unexpected plot twists and turns in this bold, studio-quality thriller.”
The series will be available on Youtube Red, the streaming giant’s subscription channel. Youtube Red is already home to the surprisingly good The Karate Kid follow-up series Cobra Kai and the dance series Step Up: High Water, which I haven’t seen but, guessing from the title, I assume it’s about kids dancing on a sinking ship.
At the Origin panel at San Diego Comic Con, Felton assured the crowd that there were non-stop Harry Potter jokes throughout the shooting, and that his castmates referred to him as Draco constantly:
All kinds of #HarryPotter jokes on the set of #Origin and @TomFelton was called “Draco” for the entire shoot 🤣😂 #SDCC pic.twitter.com/GFRiEMKHRz

When asked about similarities between his character Logan on Origin and the famous Slytherin, Felton said, “I think bugger all! One was a wizard with crap parents, the other is a petty drug dealer from California. My eyes are the same color.”
Are you going to watch Origin when it premieres on Youtube Premium, or is the thought of subscribing to yet another streaming channel too much for you/your wallet?
